Bike to San Galgano Abbey
Departure with driver/guide for a half day excursion
Arrival in Monticiano start the biking tour through the Val di Merse
Visit the San Galgano Abbey
From Monticiano, you will leave in the direction of the ancient road "L’Antica Strada Maremmana”. The magnificent natural setting will take you to the Pian di Campora, paralleling and crossing several times the Fosso Laccera.
From here, you will reach the Cistercian Abbey of San Galgano and the Hermitage of Montesiepi, which contains a group of frescos by Ambrogio Lornezetti. The Abbey is one of the most beautiful and frequently visited medieval sites in Tuscany, richly steeped in history and legend. The construction began in the 13th century, and although the Abbey went into a rapid decline after the 15th century and lost much of its original splendor, recent restoration has recovered much of the beauty of this site.
The nearby Ancient Hermitage is located at the original site of Saint Galgano’s hut, and was built in the 12th century after the Saint’s death. It is Romanesque in style and hosts the tomb of Saint Galgano and the famous Sword in the Stone.
From here you will retrace your steps until the bridge over the Merse River and ride on a dirt road until you return to Monticiano.
